Seven people died on Wednesday when a tourist helicopter crashed in the Samburu County region of central Kenya. The victims include Michele Sensi-Contugi, the director of Ecuador's National Intelligence Center, and his wife, Stephany Hollihan. According to the U.S. State Department, five of the deceased were American citizens. Among them was Jose Alberto Suarez, a senior executive for the Spanish-language broadcaster Telemundo who managed stations in Florida.

The aircraft, a Eurocopter EC130 B4, crashed at 9:13 a.m. local time near Mount Ololokwe. The helicopter was operating a charter flight for guests of the luxury tour agency &Beyond, traveling from the Loisaba wildlife reserve toward the Ewaso Nyiro area. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Department have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Search and recovery efforts were hampered by difficult terrain and a fire at the crash site, leading authorities to suspend operations overnight.

President Daniel Noboa of Ecuador, who was on an official visit to China at the time, declared three days of national mourning and ordered a state funeral for Sensi-Contugi. The Ecuadorian government has begun coordinating the repatriation of remains through its embassy in South Africa and other diplomatic allies, as Ecuador does not have a resident mission in Kenya. Luis Carlos Avila has been appointed as the interim head of intelligence services.

Sensi-Contugi, 44, was a former businessman and a close associate of President Noboa. He had served as the head of intelligence since early 2024 and briefly held the position of Minister of Government. His wife, Stephany Hollihan, was a fashion designer and the CEO of Sensi Studio. Some reports also noted Sensi-Contugi's Italian heritage, with the mayor of Volterra, Italy, issuing a statement regarding the family's history in the region.
