Eddie Dunbar Wins Stage 19 of Vuelta a España as Santiago Buitrago Finishes Second

Irish cyclist Eddie Dunbar of the Pinarello Q36.5 Pro team won stage 19 of the 2026 Vuelta a España. The 210 kilometer route from Vélez-Málaga to Peñas Blancas concluded with Dunbar overtaking Colombian rider Santiago Buitrago in the final 500 meters. Buitrago, representing Bahrain Victorious, had launched a solo attack two kilometers from the finish line after receiving support from teammate Pau Miquel, but he was unable to sustain the effort in the closing meters.

The stage was defined by a breakaway group that included Buitrago and Dunbar, which at one point held a lead of over seven minutes over the main peloton. The final climb to Peñas Blancas spanned nearly 19 kilometers with an average gradient of 6.5 percent and ramps reaching 15 percent. While Buitrago finished second, he successfully maintained his lead in the mountains classification, reaching 78 points and extending his advantage over Wout van Aert to 38 points.

In the general classification battle, Enric Mas controlled the final meters to maintain his lead over Primoz Roglic and Felix Gall. The center left source framed the result as Buitrago narrowly missing a victory he has been seeking throughout the race. In contrast, the center right source framed the performance as a brilliant display of high mountain riding that ratified Buitrago's leadership in the mountains category.
