Egyptian television presenter Sarah Khalifa and 11 other individuals were sentenced to death by hanging by Cairo’s Criminal Court on drug related charges. According to a state owned Egyptian outlet, the group was found guilty of operating a drug trafficking network that specialized in importing substances used to manufacture narcotics. The court also imposed fines of 500,000 Egyptian pounds on the defendants. In addition to the death sentences, nine other people received life imprisonment and seven were acquitted.
Prosecutors stated that the network imported materials for synthetic drug production from abroad and stored them at a residential property. Authorities reported seizing 750 kilograms of synthetic narcotics and raw materials. The case relied on testimony from 20 witnesses, as well as photographs, video footage, and conversations. The defendants were also accused of possessing unlicensed firearms.
Khalifa, a well known presenter with 2.5 million Instagram followers who runs a beauty clinic, reportedly wept during the sentencing. In a video circulating on social media, she claimed she had been wronged and stated that she had never smoked a cigarette in her life. CNN noted that it was unable to independently verify the footage. Amnesty International reports that Egypt issued 492 death sentences in 2025 and executed 23 prisoners, marking one of the highest rates in the world.
