Eight engineering students from Tamil Nadu died after their car rammed into a parked lorry on National Highway 66 in the Thrissur district of Kerala. The accident occurred around 11:40 pm on Friday, September 4, 2026, at Panambikkunnu in Kaipamangalam. The victims were traveling from Guruvayur toward Kodungallur when the collision occurred.
Emergency responders, including fire and rescue personnel and local residents, had to cut open the wreckage to extract the victims. While most sources state the occupants died on the spot, one report notes that seven died at the scene and one succumbed to injuries at a hospital. The bodies were transported to the mortuary at Thrissur Medical College.
Police identified the victims as students from an engineering college in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu. Six of the deceased have been identified as Surya, Yuvasanjith, Vishva, and Johua from Dindigul, and Santhosh and Prasanna from Madurai.
Reports differ on the cause of the crash. One account states the lorry was illegally parked on the right side of the highway near a construction diversion and that the car was traveling at high speed. Kaipamangalam police have registered a case against the lorry driver, who fled the scene, under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for culpable homicide.
