Eight Year Old Colombian Boy Requests Presidential Help for Medical Trial in Spain

Liam Santiago Ramos Garcera, an eight year old boy from Bogota diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, released a video message addressed to Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella to request financial assistance for a trip to Spain. Liam explained that he needs to be in Barcelona by September 25 to begin a clinical trial that he believes could change his life and the lives of other children. During the video, the boy described the difficulties of his condition, including frequent falls and the impact of the disease on his muscles, heart, and lungs.

Liam stated that his family previously traveled to Spain but returned to Colombia due to housing difficulties. He further claimed that his parents have struggled to secure pediatric appointments in Bogota through Nueva EPS. In response, Nueva EPS announced on August 30 that it has received Liam's medical history and documentation from his time in Spain. The health entity stated that it will use this information to confirm his diagnosis and guarantee access to the necessary evaluations, services, and treatments to ensure continuity of care within Colombia.
