Emma Bonino Dies After Long Battle with Rare Lung Cancer

Emma Bonino, the prominent Radical Party leader and Europeanist, has died in Rome. She had been battling a rare form of lung cancer known as small cell lung carcinoma, or microcitoma polmonare, since her diagnosis in 2015. This aggressive form of cancer is characterized by rapid growth and a high tendency to spread early to lymph nodes and distant organs. Medical experts note that while the prognosis for this disease is typically negative, recent advancements in immunotherapy combined with chemotherapy have increased life expectancy for some patients.

Bonino's life was marked by her intense political activism and her role as a feminist. In the mid 1970s, she was a key militant for a clandestine abortion clinic in Florence. This facility, directed by Dr. Giorgio Conciani and supported by the Radical Party, was one of the largest of its kind in Italy, performing approximately 50 abortions per day between 1974 and 1975. Bonino's involvement included directing women to the clinic and operating the Cisa information center in Milan. She spent time in hiding to avoid arrest before eventually being detained in Milan.

In her personal life, Bonino spoke of her experience with motherhood through the semi legal fostering of two girls, Aurora and Rugiada, which she suggested fulfilled her desire for maternity. Tributes to her legacy describe her as a stubborn and decisive leader who fought against mediocrity and the banal nature of evil. She remained concerned about the state of the world until her final days, specifically citing the slow movement of the European project and ongoing global conflicts.
