Emmanuel Macron Faces Criticism Over Vacation Photos During French Heatwave and Fires

French President Emmanuel Macron is facing criticism after photos were published showing him practicing water sports, including jet skiing, during his vacation at the Fort de Brégançon residence. The images were released while France experienced successive heatwaves and historic forest fires. The report in Paris Match described the vacation as studious, noting that the president had an office set up and spent his days on the phone, while also mentioning his activities in boxing and running.

Political reactions have been largely critical, particularly from the left. Marine Tondelier, leader of the Ecologists, described the season as an apocalyptic summer and characterized the photos as a promotional piece. Olivier Faure, first secretary of the Socialist Party, questioned the message sent by the president enjoying himself while parts of the country burned and some citizens could not afford vacations. Communist Senator Pierre Ouzoulias stated that Macron should have been in a fire truck helping to extinguish blazes instead.

From a different political perspective, the far right offered a more tempered critique. Deputy Edwige Diaz of the National Rally called the photos unfortunate and inappropriate, but she added that everyone has the right to take a vacation and that there are more important issues.

Macron's team responded by stating that the photographer had no authorized access to produce the material. They noted that stealthy photos of the president have appeared annually for nine years.
