Escalation in Yemen and Saudi Arabia Leaves Dozens Injured and Several Dead

A sharp escalation in hostilities between the Saudi led coalition and Yemen's Houthi rebels has resulted in numerous casualties on both sides. The Saudi led coalition reports that Houthi attacks on the Saudi cities of Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan, and Najran wounded 73 civilians, including women and children. Coalition spokesperson Major General Turki al Maliki described these attacks on civilian and economic sites as a dangerous escalation and a violation of Saudi sovereignty. Reports from the Financial Times indicate that Aramco oil facilities in Jazan were among the targets, though Aramco has not commented.

Simultaneously, the Houthis have accused Saudi Arabia of conducting an air strike on the Central Corrective Facility in al Hazm, located in Yemen's al Jawf province. Houthi officials state the strike killed seven people, including a child, and wounded at least seven others. Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree further claimed that his forces shot down four Saudi reconnaissance drones within a 24 hour period and attacked Saudi military supply trucks in Hadramout province. Saudi Arabia has not commented on these specific allegations.

These events coincide with intensified fighting inside Yemen. The internationally recognized Yemeni government claims to have made territorial gains in the al Jawf, Bayda, Dahle, and Marib provinces. Meanwhile, battles for control of the strategic Bab el Mandeb strait have reportedly left more than 300 people dead. UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg has called for maximum restraint, warning that the situation could spiral into a full scale war.
