The European Union delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS has rejected reports claiming that it declined an invitation from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to observe the 2027 general elections. EU Ambassador Gautier Mignot stated on Monday that reports suggesting the bloc was pulling out of the observation process were inaccurate and speculative.
Mignot confirmed that the EU received a formal invitation from INEC on April 17, 2026. In a response dated July 28, 2026, the delegation informed INEC that it would deploy an Electoral Expert Mission (EEM) consisting of two to four independent experts. This mission will assess whether the electoral process aligns with international, regional, and national obligations and will provide a final report with recommendations.
Some media outlets and political parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had reported that the EU was withdrawing due to worsening insecurity and hostile treatment following the 2023 elections. The PDP described the alleged withdrawal as a vote of no confidence in the APC led administration. Mignot debunked these claims, stating that such reasons did not appear in the EU letter and were pure speculations.
The ambassador explained that the EU determines the type of mission sent to partner countries based on individual situations and available resources. He further noted that this decision does not affect the continuation of the EU funded project titled Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria.
