An EU naval mission intercepted the oil tanker MV Sun in the Mediterranean on August 30. Kaja Kallas, the EU's top diplomat, confirmed the boarding on August 31, stating the vessel was suspected of sailing under a false flag in breach of international maritime law. The operation was carried out by EUNAVFOR MED Irini, a mission originally launched in 2020 to monitor a UN arms embargo on Libya that has since expanded its scope to include vessel verification. Kallas noted that the MV Sun is the sixth such vessel to be boarded by EU naval missions. She further stated that illegal oil sales from shadow fleet ships serve as a critical lifeline for Russia's war in Ukraine and that the EU will continue to cut them off. The EU has sanctioned 673 ships belonging to the shadow fleet to date, with more potential listings expected in a forthcoming sanctions package. Additionally, individual nations including the U.K. France, Sweden, and Belgium have boarded suspected shadow fleet vessels in their own territorial waters.
