Europe Braces for Fifth Heatwave as Temperatures Surge and Drought Deepens

Europe is preparing for its fifth heatwave since May as a strengthening heat dome pushes temperatures sharply higher across western, central, and southern regions. In the United Kingdom, temperatures are forecast to reach 36 degrees Celsius by Thursday, which would mark the fourth consecutive month the country has recorded temperatures of 35 degrees Celsius or higher. In France, Météo-France has placed 22 departments on orange heatwave alert, with some areas potentially approaching 40 degrees Celsius. Spain may see the most extreme temperatures, with forecasts reaching 42 degrees Celsius in the south by Wednesday. Italy has placed all 27 cities under its national heat surveillance system on red alert, with temperatures potentially hitting 40 degrees Celsius in several regions.

The extreme heat is coinciding with severe dry conditions. In the UK, half of England and all of Wales are officially in drought, and the National Drought Group is meeting to determine if more regions should be added. Over 23 million people in the UK are facing hosepipe bans. The European Forest Fire Information System has forecast very extreme fire conditions for parts of southern Britain, northwestern France, and an area stretching from the Alps to the Balkans. In France, weather services warned that the heat will further dry parched soils and vegetation, increasing the risk of wildfires.

Infrastructure and public health are primary concerns. UK officials have warned of potential impacts on power networks and railway lines, while health officials noted a potential rise in deaths among vulnerable populations.
