European Nations Coordinate Diplomatic Response to Russian Drone Attack in Germany

Multiple European nations have summoned Russian diplomats or issued formal condemnations following a drone attack at Leipzig airport in Germany. The German government attributed the incident to Russia, prompting Berlin to order the closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn and a Russian cultural center in Berlin. In a show of solidarity, the United Kingdom, Poland, Belgium, and the Netherlands also summoned Russian diplomatic representatives to condemn the attack. Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin described Russia's aggression as an existential threat to eastern EU members.

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski called for stricter EU visa controls for Russian citizens and diplomats, arguing that Russia is attempting to destroy the EU from within. Poland has also summoned Russia's ambassador to Warsaw and previously closed all Russian consulates within its borders. Additionally, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk suggested that recent attempts to sabotage Germany's electricity network and a fire at a Polish drone factory were likely part of Russia's escalatory actions in the region.

Russia has denied the accusations, calling the claims regarding the Leipzig attack fabricated and a coordinated provocation. In response to the closure of its facilities in Germany, Russia announced it would close German cultural centers in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Yekaterinburg. The Russian embassy in London further stated that any escalatory measures by European countries would receive a calibrated response.
