Europol Reports Rise in Violent Museum Heists and Shift in Criminal Tactics

Museum robberies in Europe are becoming increasingly violent, according to a report released Monday by Europol. The EU police agency noted a shift toward forceful methods, including the use of sledgehammers, axes, firearms, and explosives to breach buildings and display cases. These tactics contrast with traditional cultural goods trafficking, which typically relied on stealth and deception.

Europol reports that specialized criminal groups are being replaced by decentralized, ad hoc groups of opportunists. These individuals are often recruited locally via social media and instant communication channels under a crime as a service model. Many of these recruits have histories in other types of crime rather than specializing in art theft.

Thieves are increasingly targeting precious metals, jewelry, and ancient Chinese porcelain due to high demand and financial gain. Gold and silver are preferred because they can be easily melted down to remove traces, while gemstones can be removed and resold. The report attributes the focus on gold to its rising price, which has increased by 85 percent over the last two years.

Recent examples of this trend include a January heist at a museum in the Netherlands where explosives were used to steal a 2,500 year old Dacian gold helmet and bracelets. In Paris, a 2024 robbery at the Cognacq Jay art museum involved suspects with baseball bats and axes. Additionally, a heist at the Louvre in October involved thieves breaking a window and threatening guards and visitors to steal jewelry valued at 88 million euros, including the tiara of Empress Eugenie.
