Extreme Heat and Drought Disrupt Central Europe

Central Europe is experiencing extreme heat and drought that have led to record low water levels in the Danube River and historic dryness across Germany. In Hungary, Romania, and Austria, these low river levels are forcing nuclear and hydroelectric power plants to reduce or stop production; tourism and fishing industries are also affected. The German Weather Service reports that Hessen and North Rhine Westphalia experienced their driest July since 1881.

The heat has caused significant infrastructure damage in Germany, including bursting asphalt on roads and damaged rails in Leipzig. Economic researchers from Allianz Research suggest that extreme heat could lead to substantial GDP losses for Germany by 2030 because of decreased consumption and investment. Additionally, the Robert Koch Institute reports nearly 10,000 deaths related to heat this year.

Environmental hazards have increased across the region. Forest fires are raging in Crete and the Chiemgau Alps, while zombie fires continue to smolder underground in South France. In Hessen, officials warned against swimming in the Edersee due to a proliferation of blue green algae caused by high temperatures and low water levels.
