Extreme Heat Wave Hits Italy Affecting Public Health and Sporting Events

Italy is experiencing a severe heat wave with temperatures expected to reach 40 degrees Celsius or higher in several regions. Meteorological reports indicate peaks of 41 degrees in Terni and 40 degrees in Ferrara, Florence, Modena, and Piacenza. High humidity levels are contributing to perceived temperatures as high as 44 degrees in certain areas, including the Po Valley and various coastal regions. Consequently, the Italian Ministry of Health has issued red alerts for numerous cities; the number of cities under this alert is expected to increase from three to 19 by August 1.

This extreme weather is impacting the European Rowing Championships in Varese, where water levels in Lake Varese have fallen approximately 30 centimeters below the historical zero point. To combat the heat, athletes from the German rowing team are utilizing ice packs and specialized cooling vests during warm-up phases. National coach Sabine Tschäge stated that rising temperatures may necessitate rescheduling competitions to earlier or later times, while sinking water levels could eventually limit which regatta courses remain viable for events.
