Fabien Roussel Announces Candidacy for 2027 French Presidential Election

Fabien Roussel, the national secretary of the French Communist Party (PCF), officialized his candidacy for the 2027 French presidential election during a Sunday appearance on TF1's JT. The announcement follows an internal party vote in which 72.06 percent of the 24,000 participating militants supported his run, while 22 percent opposed it. Roussel, who is 57 years old and the mayor of Saint-Amand-les-Eaux, described his platform as a project of rupture intended to restore purchasing power and respect workers.

This bid follows a 2022 presidential attempt where Roussel received 2.28 percent of the vote. That result led to criticism from La France insoumise (LFI), with some representatives claiming his candidacy prevented Jean-Luc Mélenchon from reaching the second round. Following the new announcement, LFI deputy president Mathilde Panot expressed hope that lessons would be learned from the 2022 outcome. Roussel stated he does not wish to discuss other candidates during the campaign and expressed a goal to help the left become a majority in the country again.

His candidacy places him among several figures on the left, including Jean-Luc Mélenchon, Marine Tondelier, Raphaël Glucksmann, and Olivier Faure. Roussel's proposed measures include doubling the share of industry in the GDP and doubling the production of nuclear, renewable, and hydraulic electricity.
