Farmers launch five day sit in outside Punjab Minister's office in Hoshiarpur

Farmers under the banner of Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) launched a five day sit in on Monday, September 14, 2026, outside the office of Punjab Cabinet Minister Ravjot Singh in Hoshiarpur. The protest is part of a wider call for sit ins outside the residences and offices of several Punjab ministers to press the state government to hold talks regarding a 12 point charter of demands.

In Hoshiarpur, the demonstration was organized by the KMM, Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) Doaba, Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, and Kisan Mazdoor Hitkari Sabha. BKU Doaba state president Manjit Singh Rai stated that farmer organizations have already submitted memorandums to deputy commissioners across the state. He warned that if the government refuses to hold talks, a meeting will be convened on September 16 to decide on further actions, which could include blocking highways and railway tracks.

The protesters' demands include a complete loan waiver for farmers and farm workers, the withdrawal of police and railway cases registered during previous agitations, and the procurement of basmati, maize, moong, mustard, and potatoes at minimum support prices. They are also seeking government jobs and compensation for families of farmers and workers who died by suicide or during protests.

Additional demands include an immediate halt to the installation of prepaid electricity meters, the withdrawal of the land pooling policy, and an end to the forcible acquisition of land for Bharatmala projects. The group is calling for Punjab Assembly resolutions opposing the Seed Act 2025, Cooperative Act 2026, VB G RAM G Act, the Electricity Amendment Bill 2025, and a proposed India U.S. trade agreement.

Manjit Singh Rai also criticized the state government over unscheduled power cuts affecting tube well irrigation and alleged a coal shortage that contradicts claims made by the Chief Minister. He asserted that these power shortages are impacting both the industrial sector and farmers.
