A fatal traffic accident occurred during the early hours of Saturday in the province of Espinar, Cusco, when a passenger minivan collided with the rear of a trailer. The crash took place around 2 a.m. at kilometer 250 of the road connecting Cusco and Arequipa, specifically in the district of Pallpata. Reports on the casualties vary across sources, with death tolls cited as nine, thirteen, or at least thirteen people. The victims include the driver of the minivan, identified as 36 year old Raúl Rómulo Huamaní Enríquez, and several passengers.
Between four and six people were injured in the collision and transported to medical facilities in Espinar or Arequipa. The minivan had traveled from Challhuahuacho, Apurímac, through Chumbivilcas, with a final destination of Arequipa. The trailer was driven by 72 year old Ángel Quisiyupanqui. One report indicates the trailer had stopped due to a mechanical failure and that the driver had used cones and a flashlight to warn other motorists.
The National Police and the Public Ministry are conducting investigations to determine the exact cause of the accident. The driver of the heavy vehicle has been detained as part of the ongoing inquiry. Authorities are currently working to officially identify all of the deceased and evaluate the dynamics of the impact.
