Fatal Wildfire Ravages Croatian Coast Near Omiš

A severe wildfire that broke out Thursday evening in the Omiš region of southern Croatia has left at least one person dead. Police discovered a body while searching the burned area on Friday afternoon. The fire spread rapidly through brush and pine forests, threatening residential homes and tourist accommodations. Croatian authorities evacuated approximately 2,000 people, including residents and tourists, while more than 110 firefighters and Canadair aircraft worked to contain the blaze. Strong winds complicated the firefighting efforts and caused the flames to move in different directions.

Casualties include dozens of injured people. Reports indicate that between 36 and 40 people received medical treatment in Split, with seven individuals in critical condition on ventilators. The fire caused significant property damage, destroying several dozen residential buildings, restaurants, vehicles, boats, and parts of the electrical grid.

At least 58 Hungarian citizens were evacuated from the affected areas. The Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that four Hungarians were injured, with one treated for a limb injury in a Split hospital. Seven Hungarian citizens from two families had to flee on foot, and their vehicles may have been lost in the fire. Approximately 45 Hungarians were registered at a reception center in a sports hall in Omiš, while others were assisted by the Red Cross and Croatian authorities. Hungarian consular services and police officers from Zadar provided support to ensure the safe return of their citizens.
