Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.

Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.

The owner of each outlet is listed as a matter of record, not as a judgement about the outlet.

Gloria Steinem, the influential writer and activist, has died at the age of 92. Her passing occurred shortly before the scheduled September 22 release of her final memoir, An Unexpected Life. The book reflects on her childhood in Ohio, her political awakening, and her role in second wave feminism. In the introduction, Steinem wrote that she was older and happier than she ever imagined she would be, noting that she had hoped to live to 100.

Public figures across various fields have celebrated her legacy. Margaret Atwood described her as the epitome of second wave feminism, while Melinda French Gates credited her with helping women see they belonged at decision making tables. Other tributes came from musician Dua Lipa, actor Sandra Bernhard, and journalist Ronan Farrow. One report noted that Steinem was a trailblazer for women in journalism and politics who remained open to learning from critics.

Steinem's death occurred eight days after the passing of singer Dolly Parton. While Steinem was overtly political and founded Ms Magazine, Parton rejected the feminist label to avoid political extremes. Despite this difference, Steinem had previously argued that Parton embodied feminism by helping other women find their unique power.

Outlets with different political leanings highlighted different aspects of her life. Center right coverage focused on her personal reflections and her relationship with Dolly Parton. Center left and left leaning coverage emphasized her systemic impact as a trailblazer and a lighthouse for future generations of activists.
