Saimoni Vunilagi, a 26 year old Fijian rugby player for the second division side Kyushu KV, has died after suffering symptoms consistent with severe heatstroke. Vunilagi was taken to a hospital in Fukuoka on Monday following a team practice and passed away on Friday morning. The player was a back row forward who stood 1.96 meters tall and weighed 117 kilograms. He had begun his professional career in 2023 after attending university in Japan.
The death occurred amid a period of intense heat in Japan. Temperatures in Fukuoka reached 35 degrees Celsius on the day Vunilagi fell ill, while other parts of the country have seen temperatures exceed 40 degrees Celsius in recent weeks. Kyushu KV expressed devastation over the loss, noting that Vunilagi's powerful style of play had raised high hopes for the upcoming season.
