First Ganga Aarti Ceremony Held on London's River Thames

Thousands of people gathered on the banks of the River Thames in London for the first ever Ganga Aarti, a traditional Hindu ceremony of light and gratitude. The event, titled "Ganga Aarti on the Thames: A Ceremony of Light," was organized by Chinmaya Mission UK in collaboration with the annual Totally Thames Festival. Set against the backdrop of the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, the ceremony featured music, chants, prayers, and the use of large, multi tiered oil lamps to recreate the spirit of the rituals traditionally performed on the banks of the River Ganges in India.

The event marked the 75th anniversary of the Chinmaya Mission, a global movement dedicated to spiritual education and the wisdom of Vedanta. Brahmacharini Shripriya Chaitanya, Resident Teacher of Chinmaya Mission UK, stated that the ceremony brought people together in a shared moment of hope, unity, and gratitude for nature. The gathering included spiritual leaders, Hindu organizations, and members of the South Asian and British Hindu communities, though organizers noted the event was open to people of all backgrounds.

To protect the environment, organizers ensured the ritual took place entirely on land. No materials were poured or released into the river, and ceremonial lamps remained on the riverbank. The Chinmaya Mission also implemented measures to reduce single use plastics and minimize waste, emphasizing that respect for nature should be reflected through responsible environmental practices.
