At least five people were killed and between 80 and 87 people remain missing after a fire broke out aboard the ferry M/V June Aster on Wednesday evening. The incident occurred approximately 2.2 kilometers offshore near a tourist hotspot in the province of Palawan in the western Philippines. The vessel had departed from Baseco in Manila and was bound for Coron. According to the Philippine Coast Guard, the ship's manifest listed 134 people on board, consisting of 117 passengers and 17 crew members. Rescue operations saved 42 to 43 people, including 38 passengers and four crew members. Coast Guard Captain Noemi Cayabyab stated that the figures are live data and may change as search and rescue operations continue. Footage released by the Coast Guard showed the vessel engulfed in flames and responders placing bodies in body bags. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Some reports noted that maritime accidents are common in the Philippines due to poor vessel maintenance, overcrowding, and inadequate safety standards.
