Former AIMIM Spokesperson Syed Asim Waqar Joins Congress Party

Syed Asim Waqar, a former spokesperson for the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), joined the Congress party on Wednesday, September 2, 2026. The induction took place at the Congress party headquarters in New Delhi in the presence of AICC in-charge for Uttar Pradesh Rajendra Pal Gautam, State Congress president Ajay Rai, and AICC Minority Department chairman Imran Pratapgarhi. Waqar, who was considered close to AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi and was a prominent voice for the party in Uttar Pradesh, accused the AIMIM of paying lip service to the goal of defeating the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He stated that while the party claimed to want the BJP removed, it actually fought other opposition forces like the Congress and the Samajwadi Party on the ground. Waqar argued that by weakening the opposition, the AIMIM was effectively helping the BJP. He expressed his support for Rahul Gandhi and the Congress, describing them as the primary force fighting the BJP at the national level. Congress leaders stated that Waqar's move reflects the appeal of their campaigns on issues such as employment and education, and that his induction would strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
