Former Argentine Justice Minister Alberto Iribarne Dies at 75

Alberto Iribarne, who served as the Minister of Justice during the presidency of Néstor Kirchner, has died at the age of 75 or 76. His daughters confirmed the news on social media, describing him as an affectionate and supportive man of deep convictions. Iribarne had a long career in Argentine politics as a national deputy, a constituent assembly member, and an ambassador. During his tenure as Minister of Justice starting in 2005, he supported the reopening of trials for crimes against humanity and promoted reforms to the Criminal Procedural Code. He also served as the Argentine ambassador to Uruguay during the administration of Alberto Fernández. Earlier in his career, he held roles as viceminister of the Interior under Carlos Menem and head of the Interior Security Secretariat under Eduardo Duhalde. He also managed Duhalde's 1999 presidential campaign. Iribarne was a lawyer who graduated from the University of Buenos Aires in 1974 and later taught at the University of Buenos Aires and the University of Salvador. Political figures including Agustín Rossi and Mariano Caucino offered tributes, noting his commitment to a democratic and modern version of Peronism.
