Former Lega Nord Members Form Committee to Challenge Matteo Salvini

A group of former parliamentarians and provincial secretaries has established the Committee for the Convocation of the Federal Congress to regain control of the original Lega Nord. The group, which includes former parliamentarian Gianluca Pini, seeks to hold a congress for the old party structure. This structure has functioned primarily as a vehicle to repay 49 million euros owed to the state since 2017. The committee aims to unblock the party symbol and remove the current commissioner, Igor Iezzi, who is a close ally of Matteo Salvini.

Promoters of the initiative claim that the current leadership has violated party statutes and regulations. They argue that the goal is to rediscover a federalist Lega and separate it from the current sovereignist project. While one source mentions the potential involvement of several regional governors and Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti, Lombardy President Attilio Fontana stated that the committee is not connected to the discussions he is having with Salvini.

Sources close to Salvini have dismissed the move, characterizing the promoters as individuals seeking power who previously endangered the party. They questioned whether these members are willing to take responsibility for the party's debts and emphasized that the current Lega is actively governing with hundreds of mayors and ministers. The center-right framing presents the event as a direct challenge to Salvini's leadership by those who reject his political operations, while the center framing presents it as a conflict between a new front of former members and the current party administration.
