Former House Speaker Martin Romualdez, a cousin of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. was arrested on Monday for plunder. The arrest took place at Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan City at 7:20 p.m. following reports that Romualdez had been rushed to the hospital earlier that day due to a panic attack and a cardiovascular event. The Office of the Ombudsman filed the case alleging that Romualdez received 7.44 billion pesos, or approximately 118 million US dollars, in kickbacks from government projects, including flood control infrastructure, between 2022 and 2025.
Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla described Romualdez as a central figure in the scandal. Investigators allege that Romualdez and other individuals conspired to unlawfully accumulate 56 billion pesos in ill gotten wealth. The allegations were first linked to Romualdez by government contractors Curlee and Sarah Discaya. Romualdez has denied any involvement in the scheme, and his lawyers have argued that he was prejudged by the Ombudsman.
Senator Panfilo Lacson stated that the arrest should silence critics who accused President Marcos of weak leadership or of shielding allies. This follows a previous State of the Nation Address where Marcos vowed to pursue cases related to the flood control mess.
