Former Prime Minister Kim Min-seok won the Democratic Party (DP) primaries in the capital region on Sunday. Kim earned a combined 46.66 percent of the votes from Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. Jung Chung-rae, who is seeking a second consecutive term as DP leader, finished second with 46.28 percent. Former DP leader Song Young-gil finished third with 7.06 percent.

Kim has previously won rounds in the central Chungcheong region, Incheon, Jeju Island, Gangwon Province, Daegu, North Gyeongsang Province, Gwangju, and Jeolla provinces. Jung won in Busan, Ulsan, and South Gyeongsang Province. Kim currently leads the race in cumulative votes with 49.91 percent, while Jung trails at 41.51 percent.

The party's national convention will be held Monday to elect the new leader. The winner will play a key role in overseeing candidate nominations for the 2028 parliamentary elections.
