Former Trinamool Congress MLA Nirmal Ghosh was mobbed and attacked outside the Khardah Police Station on Friday, August 14, 2026. The incident occurred as police were escorting Mr. Ghosh to the Barrackpore Court in North 24 Parganas. Protesters hurled eggs, muck, bricks, and sticks at the former MLA, while some carried garlands made of shoes and shouted slogans calling him a thief. Police attempted to protect him using a helmet, but he was still subjected to physical attacks including kicks and slaps. Mr. Ghosh was subsequently sent to eight days of police custody.
Mr. Ghosh had been arrested from Odisha the previous day for his alleged involvement in the hurried cremation of the RG Kar rape and murder victim. A former councillor and aide to Mr. Ghosh, Sanjib Mukherjee, was also arrested and subjected to similar attacks. Mr. Ghosh also faces accusations in a separate case regarding the theft of lottery prize money.
