France is expelling two Iranian diplomats after security services in Tehran detained and interrogated two French Embassy staffers last month. Foreign Minister Jean Noël Barrot announced the decision on Tuesday evening. The incident occurred on July 19 when two employees, including the cultural attaché, were questioned for several hours. Barrot stated that the diplomats were beaten and described the act as a premeditated violation of diplomatic protections.
Tehran has disputed the French account. Iran's foreign ministry claims the French diplomats violated the Vienna Convention by interfering in Iranian affairs. As a result, Iran declared both individuals persona non grata and barred them from returning. Pascal Confavreux, a spokesperson for the French foreign ministry, responded by accusing Tehran of fabricating the interference case and making false accusations.
