France Investigates Train Derailment in Normandy

A regional train carrying approximately 180 to 186 passengers derailed on Friday evening between the cities of Rouen and Caen in Normandy, France. The accident occurred near the municipalities of Cleon and Tourville la Riviere, leaving 44 people injured. One 18 year old woman was initially in critical condition and evacuated by helicopter, though authorities later stated her life is no longer in danger. Emergency response included roughly 140 firefighters and multiple medical teams. The train driver tested negative for alcohol and drugs.

Investigators discovered a piece of rail weighing between 250 and 300 kilograms on the tracks. The president of the Normandy region, Herve Morin, stated that the object did not arrive there by chance because a train had passed the same point one hour prior and no construction work was taking place. While some reports indicate the train was traveling at 120 to 140 km per hour, the impact caused the locomotive to overturn and several carriages to derail.
