France will expel two Iranian diplomats in the coming days, French Foreign Minister Jean Noel Barrot announced on Tuesday. The move is a retaliatory measure after Iran declared two diplomats from the French embassy in Tehran persona non grata and banned them from returning to Iran.
The dispute stems from an incident on July 19, when Iranian security services detained and questioned two French embassy staff members for several hours. Minister Barrot described the event as an intolerable act of intimidation and a flagrant violation of diplomatic immunity, stating that one of the diplomats was physically abused. The French Foreign Ministry has dismissed Iranian claims of interference as fabricated and false.
Iranian authorities have denied allegations of mistreatment. The Iranian Foreign Ministry stated that the French diplomats violated the Vienna Convention by interfering in internal affairs under the pretext of engaging with civil society. Iran's intelligence ministry further claimed that an initial probe showed the pair were planning a scheme to undermine Iranian independence.
Reports also indicate that two Iranian graphic designers, Aria Kasaei and Elly Naghilou, were arrested on July 19 during a meeting with the French diplomats regarding a cultural project called Villa Zadig. Supporters of the artists have called for their release and for France to help establish the circumstances of their arrests. Minister Barrot did not mention the arrests of the Iranian citizens in his announcement.
