Nabila Habiby, a 39 year old wealth manager, failed to appear at Wood Green Crown Court for her sentencing after claiming she was hit on the head by luggage while traveling to the airport. Habiby admitted to two charges of fraud involving the pawning of a modern art collection belonging to former Premier League footballer Edgar Davids. The collection was valued at 188,000 pounds. Habiby obtained 31,500 pounds in loans by surrendering 37 works of art that Davids had trusted her to store during a house move in 2014. Davids discovered the theft after pawnbrokers sold the artwork to international buyers. While some pieces were recovered, 25 works remain missing. Defense barrister Hannah Thomas stated that Habiby suffered a concussion and was hospitalized on a drip. Judge Emma Deacon KC described the medical evidence provided from Belgium as inadequate but agreed to adjourn the hearing. Habiby is now scheduled to be sentenced on September 23 and must provide a full medical report. The fraud offenses date back to 2015 and 2016.
