French Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin announced on Monday in an interview with La Voix du Nord that he will not run for president in 2027. Darmanin stated that he has decided to support Edouard Philippe, the president of Horizons and former Prime Minister from 2017 to 2020. He explained that his decision is intended to avoid further division within the central political bloc.
Darmanin cited the risk of a victory for Marine Le Pen and the Rassemblement National (RN) as a primary motivation for his withdrawal. He warned of the danger of a runoff between extremes, specifically mentioning Le Pen and left wing populist Jean Luc Mélenchon. Darmanin described Le Pen as a far more dangerous candidate than Jordan Bardella. Current President Emmanuel Macron is ineligible to run for a third consecutive term. The first round of the presidential election is scheduled for April 18, 2027.
