The Gates Foundation has pledged to spend at least $1 billion over the next two years to expand access to artificial intelligence for poor and remote communities globally. The initiative aims to ensure that AI narrows the gap between the richest and poorest rather than widening it. Bill Gates, chairman of the foundation, stated in the annual Goalkeepers report that the most capable tools would be built for those most able to pay if left to the market alone.
The funding is divided across several key sectors. Approximately 40 percent will be allocated to education, including AI tutoring initiatives to individualize learning. Another 40 percent will go toward healthcare, supporting drug and vaccine development as well as diagnostic tools for frontline workers. The remaining 20 percent will be split between agriculture, providing smallholder farmers with customized advice on soil and weather, and the creation of digital foundations to include datasets in languages not currently well understood by AI tools.
Chief executive Mark Suzman highlighted the importance of language inclusivity, noting that error rates for AI can be significantly higher in languages like Yoruba compared to English. The foundation is working with partners to facilitate AI functionality in various spoken languages, particularly in Asia and Africa. Examples of current applications include the PathGen bioinformatics program for detecting disease threats and the MahaVISTAAR AI advisory service for farmers in India.
