Genta Koja has won the Okinawa gubernatorial election, defeating two term incumbent Denny Tamaki. Koja, who was backed by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and the Liberal Democratic Party, received more than 400,000 votes, which is the highest number of votes ever recorded for a candidate in the prefecture's history. He won approximately 59 percent of the vote, securing victories in all municipalities except one village. Voter turnout was 61.57 percent.
