George Clooney Expresses Concern Over Warner and Paramount Merger

Clooney, who is set to receive the Golden Lion at the festival, noted that the consolidation of large companies typically results in people losing their jobs and described the process as complicated regardless of the amount of money involved. During the event, Clooney also defended the right of actor Mark Ruffalo to criticize the merger, citing the importance of freedom of expression within a democracy even when he disagrees with the specific views being expressed. Mark Ruffalo has been a vocal critic of the merger, specifically claiming that the Ellison family, which is linked to Oracle and Paramount, bears responsibility for the situation of Palestinians due to the technology company's relations with the Israeli Army. In response, Paramount accused Ruffalo of using antisemitic stereotypes. These comments drew criticism from the Simon Wiesenthal Center, the Creative Community for Peace, and other industry professionals who opposed linking a business deal to issues of antisemitism and antizionism. Ruffalo responded by stating that criticizing executives, military contracts, or the Israeli government is not equivalent to attacking Jewish people.
