German security authorities have identified a Russian national and a Belarusian citizen as the primary suspects in a drone attack targeting the Leipzig-Halle airport in August. According to confidential documents and security officials, the suspects are linked to Russian military intelligence, specifically the GRU. The attack involved a medium sized drone equipped with explosives that crashed near a Ukrainian Antonov cargo plane. The device failed to detonate because a part of the ignition mechanism broke. The airport is considered a strategic location due to the high volume of weapons shipments transported there for Ukraine.
Investigators believe the Russian national was responsible for planning and logistics. He entered Germany via the Berlin Brandenburg airport from Turkey, and authorities may have known of his ties to Russian intelligence at the time of entry. One official stated that limited resources prevented the man from being monitored. The Belarusian suspect entered the Schengen area through Latvia on July 28. He is described as a possible disposable agent or criminal hired to execute the sabotage under the direction of the Russian national.
The drone was constructed from easily obtainable parts, including 3D printed components and four Chinese motors sold in Russian webshops. Police also discovered an antenna attached to a tree near the airport, which was likely used to steer the drone. DNA found on a glove at the scene matches records from Finland and Lithuania. The Belarusian suspect reportedly has criminal records in both countries and may be linked to a 2024 fire in Poland that was classified as sabotage.
German agencies, including the Federal Intelligence Service and the Federal Criminal Police Office, are collaborating with Lithuania, Poland, Latvia, and Finland to investigate links to other European sabotage actions. In response to the findings, Germany announced the closure of the Russian Consulate General in Bonn and the Russian House cultural center in Berlin, while tightening entry controls for Russian citizens. Russia has described the accusations as baseless.
