A 43 year old German man died after falling more than 80 meters from a via ferrata into a rocky gully at the Rotwand near Sexten in South Tyrol, Italy. The accident occurred around midday while the man was climbing alone. Bystanders in the area alerted emergency services after hearing screams coming from the vicinity of the climbing route.
A rescue helicopter located the man in the gully, and rescue workers were rappelled down to reach him. Upon arrival, a doctor confirmed that the man had already passed away. Although he was wearing climbing equipment, no one witnessed the actual fall, and authorities were initially unsure of the exact point where he slipped. The body was recovered by helicopter and transported to a mountain hut. His specific place of origin remained unclear at the time of the report.
