German Police Hunt Suspect After Series of Power Grid Sabotage Attempts

German authorities are searching for a 48 year old man suspected of carrying out a series of sabotage attempts against the national power grid. Police and prosecutors in Brandenburg and North Rhine Westphalia have released photos of the suspect following the discovery of detonation devices and conductive materials near high voltage lines and substations. The incidents occurred in North Rhine Westphalia, Brandenburg, and Saxony, specifically targeting areas where lignite coal is used for power generation.

In Bergheim, an attack caused five lignite power plant blocks to go offline, removing 4,200 megawatts of capacity, although no widespread blackouts occurred. Other attempts were identified in Dormagen, where detonation devices were found near a transformer station, and in Saxony, where twelve devices were discovered near high voltage routes. Police searched a home in Gevelsberg and a converted camper van in Niederzier, but the suspect was not found.

Two confession letters were sent to various media outlets. One letter stated that power generation from fossil fuels is a crime. Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described the acts as likely climate terrorism by a lone actor. However, the framing of the motive differs across reports. A center leaning source highlighted the timing of the attacks as hybrid threats occurring just before an election in Saxony Anhalt, where the right wing AfD party is leading in polls. In contrast, a center right leaning source focused on the perpetrator's specific targeting of fossil fuel infrastructure and the police search for a suspected climate terrorist.
