German Police Search for Suspect After Sabotage Attempts on Power Grid

German authorities are searching for a 48 year old man from Gevelsberg suspected of orchestrating sabotage attacks against the national power grid. Police in the eastern state of Saxony have defused 21 home made explosive devices found near high voltage power lines and substations. These devices were designed to shoot conductive material across power lines to cause short circuits. Similar attacks were successfully carried out at substations in Bergheim, North Rhine Westphalia, and Jänschwalde, Brandenburg, which led to the shutdown of several power plant blocks, although no widespread power outages occurred.

Law enforcement has conducted several operations to locate the suspect, including a large scale search in the Hambach Forest near Cologne and a recent operation in the Remscheid Wuppertal area following reports of a suspicious person with a backpack. Police previously discovered explosives in the suspect's home and searched a converted camper van in a forest near Niederzier, but the man remains at large. Investigators are currently reviewing letters they believe are authentic admissions of the crimes.
