  • A hatched block means the outlet is affiliated with, or controlled by, a state.

Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.

Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.

The owner of each outlet is listed as a matter of record, not as a judgement about the outlet.

Every source for this story reports from Germany.

The German Farmers' Association (DBV) warned on Tuesday that the country's grain harvest will be below average due to a dry spring and a June heat wave. Total grain production is expected to reach 41.9 million tons, which is a 7 percent decrease from the previous year. Rapeseed saw the most significant decline at 3.3 million tons, nearly 17 percent lower than last year. While winter barley remained stable, winter wheat fell by 7 percent. The Federal Statistical Office also forecast a drop in the apple harvest. Regional impacts varied, with the most severe crop failures occurring in southern and western Germany.

Agriculture Minister Alois Rainer stated that the government does not predict sudden or sharp food price increases because prices depend on various factors including supply chains and transportation. However, the DBV warned that lower grain yields and poor grassland growth could push up the cost of feed, meat, milk, and eggs. Some reports indicate that animal feed stocks have fallen drastically in several states, which may force farmers to buy expensive feed or reduce livestock numbers.

Farmers are seeking government intervention to mitigate financial losses. DBV President Joachim Rukwied called for immediate aid, including a temporary tax cut on agricultural diesel and an increase in fertilizer aid to 180 million euros. Minister Rainer signaled support for farmers and noted that a 200 million euro program from the Landwirtschaftliche Rentenbank is already available, though he stated that concrete further aid requires reliable data.

Center leaning coverage emphasizes the broader context of global food security, linking the current drought to price hikes since 2020 and geopolitical disruptions such as the war in Ukraine and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Center right leaning coverage focuses more heavily on the specific economic distress of farm operators, describing the financial situation for many farms as toxic due to low producer prices and high input costs.

How each side framed it

Centre
Framed the harvest decline as part of a larger global food security crisis exacerbated by geopolitical conflicts.
