Germany's Trade Deficit with China Widens as Beijing Reduces Reliance on European Industry

China remained Germany's top trading partner in the first half of 2026 with a total trade volume of approximately 128 billion euros. However, the trade relationship is becoming increasingly unbalanced. German imports from China rose by nearly nine percent to almost 92 billion euros, while German exports to China fell by more than twelve percent. This shift has pushed China to ninth place among the top buyers of German goods, a significant drop from its second place ranking in 2021.

Economist Vincent Stamer of Commerzbank stated that this trend indicates China is becoming more independent of Western technology and is catching up technologically. He noted that while Germany still exports specialized components, the export of finished end products, such as machinery and automobiles, is declining. In contrast, the United States remains Germany's most important destination for exports despite a six percent decline in shipments to that country. Overall, German exports grew by 3.7 percent to nearly 817 billion euros, with over half of those exports going to EU member states.
