Gilinski Family Donates 150 Billion Pesos for Cali Reconstruction Following Earthquake

The Gilinski family has announced a donation of 150 billion Colombian pesos to rebuild hospitals and schools in Cali following a magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck on August 10. President Abelardo de la Espriella announced the donation via social media after a telephone conversation with Jaime Gilinski and his wife, Raquel. The funds will be channeled through government reconstruction mechanisms to restore essential health and education infrastructure in the city. This contribution is among the highest from the private sector, exceeding individual donations from the United States, the United Arab Emirates, and China. Other private contributions include 100 billion pesos from the Santo Domingo family and 1,000 tons of essential products from Tiendas D1. The earthquake has caused significant devastation across Colombia, with the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management reporting 289 deaths, 143 missing persons, and 4,187 injuries. In the Valle del Cauca region alone, there are 159 deaths and 40,476 affected people. Total losses from the disaster are estimated at 30 trillion pesos, while the reconstruction of Cali specifically is expected to cost approximately 10 trillion pesos over a period of two to four years.
