Gloria Steinem, a leading figure of the American feminist movement and co founder of Ms. magazine, died on Wednesday, September 2, at her home in New York City at the age of 92. Her foundation announced the news on Thursday, stating that she passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. Steinem was a central figure of second wave feminism who spent decades advocating for reproductive freedom, equal pay, and the end of domestic violence.
Born in 1934 in Toledo, Ohio, Steinem had a nomadic childhood as the daughter of a traveling salesman. She did not attend school regularly until she was around 11 or 12 years old. After graduating from Smith College and spending two years in India, she began a career as a freelance journalist. She gained early prominence in 1963 with A Bunny's Tale, an undercover exposé for Show magazine that detailed the sexist conditions and low pay for women working at the Playboy Club.
In 1968, Steinem helped found New York Magazine, where she published the influential essay After Black Power, Women's Liberation. In 1972, she co founded Ms. magazine, the first large circulation periodical created and directed by women. Throughout her career, she established several organizations, including the National Women's Political Caucus and the Women's Media Center. Her contributions were recognized in 2013 when President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Steinem's legacy is characterized by her commitment to intersectionality. She frequently stated that she learned feminism from Black women and argued that women of color essentially invented the movement. In her later years, she hosted talking circles in her home and wrote several books, including the memoir My Life on the Road. Her foundation announced that her home will become a center for social justice movements.
