- A hatched block means the outlet is affiliated with, or controlled by, a state.
Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.
Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.
The owner of each outlet is listed as a matter of record, not as a judgement about the outlet.
Google will invest at least 13 billion euros (approximately 15 billion US dollars) in artificial intelligence infrastructure in Finland over the next two years. The company described this as its largest single investment in Europe. The projects, scheduled for 2027 and 2028, will include data centers, electricity grid improvements, and clean energy and battery projects to support services such as Gemini, Search, Maps, and YouTube. The investment is expected to contribute about 3.6 billion US dollars to Finland's gross domestic product during construction and support approximately 7,000 annual jobs once operational.
As part of the deal, Google has signed its first nuclear power purchase agreement outside the United States. The 22 year contract with operator Fortum allows Google to purchase up to 50 percent of the energy output from one of Finland's two nuclear plants, the Loviisa plant. Google and Fortum also plan to explore further nuclear and renewable energy developments. Other partnerships include agreements with Fingrid, Business Finland, and Valorem for wind power. Finland was selected due to its cold climate, which reduces cooling costs for data centers, and its availability of low carbon electricity.
Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo stated that the decision is a testament to the country's strengths and will spur innovation and research. However, the project has faced criticism regarding the depletion of local resources and the impact on the climate crisis. While center leaning reports focus on the economic and technological benefits, one center leaning source highlights the debate over the actual number of jobs created relative to the massive capital investment, comparing the data center industry's job intensity to other sectors like research and development.
