Thirty eight competitors participated in a gravedigging contest on Saturday at a public cemetery in Nyergesujfalu, northern Hungary. Organized by the Hungarian Association of Cemetery Maintainers and Operators, the event featured 19 two man teams using picks and shovels to dig graves according to specific contest requirements. The competition aimed to showcase the skills of the gravedigging trade and challenge taboos related to death. Robert Nagy and Laszlo Kiss won the competition with a time of 1 hour 21 minutes. Nagy noted that while speed is the priority in the contest, professional funeral work requires more careful attention to dimensions and aesthetics.
