Guatemalan authorities have issued a nationwide orange alert, the second highest danger level, following a potent eruption of the Fuego volcano. The eruption began on Monday and intensified into a more explosive phase, characterized by columns of ash, lava fountains reaching 300 meters, and pyroclastic flows descending the volcano's slopes. The ash cloud has been reported to reach heights of 7,000 meters and disperse up to 130 kilometers to the west. In response, the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) ordered the preventive evacuation of approximately 250 people from the communities of El Porvenir and Las Lajitas in the municipality of San Juan Alotenango. These evacuees were housed in a municipal community hall. Additional measures included the suspension of in person classes in Alotenango, Escuintla, and Yepocapa, as well as the closure of National Route 14. While most reports describe the alert as orange, one center right outlet framed the situation as a red alert. The Fuego volcano is one of the most active in Central America and the Western Hemisphere. Authorities reminded the public of the risks associated with the site, noting that a major eruption in 2018 resulted in more than 200 deaths.
