The Gujarat High Court on Monday granted Aam Aadmi Party MLA Chaitar Vasava seven days of temporary bail to attend the monsoon session of the state Assembly, which is scheduled from September 9 to 11. Vasava, the legislator for Dediapada, is currently lodged in Vadodara Central Jail. He was sentenced in June by a Rajpipla sessions court to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of 25,000 rupees in a 2023 case involving extortion and the assault of forest officials. The court has barred Vasava from leaving Gandhinagar and from addressing the media or the public during his release.
The prosecution alleges that on October 30, 2023, Vasava threatened forest officials, slapped one official, and fired a pistol in the air after they removed crops from government land. His wife, Shakuntala, is accused of extorting 60,000 rupees. While his lawyers dispute the firearm claim due to a lack of ballistic reports, the high court previously refused regular bail on August 24. The court stated that a convicted legislator should not appear to be above the law and cited his antecedents as a reason for the denial.
Vasava has not been formally disqualified from his seat. He is expected to return to jail once the seven day bail period expires. His appeal against the conviction remains pending.
