A regional meeting between Iran and Gulf states scheduled for Monday in Oman to discuss the management of the Strait of Hormuz has been postponed. Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi stated the delay was in the interest of consensus. Iranian officials added that the decision was made jointly with Oman following requests from several countries in the region. The meeting would have been the first time in nearly two years that diplomats from the six Gulf Cooperation Council members sat with the Iranian foreign minister to discuss a proposal for governing shipping routes through the strait. Bahrain had previously announced it would not attend the gathering.

The diplomatic setback coincides with a surge in regional violence and threats to global energy supplies. Oil prices rose above 100 dollars per barrel, with Brent crude reaching over 108 dollars following the announcement. Saudi Arabia closed its 1,200 kilometer East West pipeline after drone strikes on Friday. This pipeline is critical for bypassing the Strait of Hormuz, which has been largely restricted since the start of the war between Iran and a coalition led by the United States and Israel in February. Some reports indicate that Saudi Arabia has only five to seven days of oil reserves at its Red Sea port of Yanbu if the pipeline remains offline.

Simultaneously, Iran aligned Houthi rebels in Yemen have advanced along the coast to reinforce control over the Bab el Mandeb strait. Houthi forces have also launched missile and drone attacks against Saudi energy infrastructure and military bases. In the Strait of Hormuz, the UKMTO reported that a projectile struck a vessel, causing a fire and forcing an evacuation. Iran confirmed the ship was a commercial vessel and reported one death and four injuries.

U.S. President Donald Trump stated he does not care about the postponed meeting, calling it their business. He reiterated his expectation that the war will end this year, possibly after the November midterm elections. Meanwhile, the U.S. Navy has reportedly diverted 101 commercial ships as part of a naval blockade of Iranian ports. Iran has warned that the security of the Strait of Hormuz cannot be guaranteed as long as the U.S. maintains this blockade.
